Sexteto Mayor - the sextet more heavy of the Tango

Author: Tarantino Luis

October 2003

Thirty years of music including twenty around the world.

SEXTETO MAYOR gained Grammy Latino and A celebrated with his/her friends

Hardly two more weeks ago, we celebrated with Claudio Segovia, creator with Hector Orezzoli, of famous Tango Argentino presenté in Paris since 1983, this spectacle which became a true hinge in the diffusion of this music. Double celebration for Segovia: its seventy years and twenty years of sound celèbre spectacle.

We were spoiled, because we were privileged witnesses in the concert that Sexteto Mayor offered to its public: that of Buenos Aires.
This already mythical group, led by the bandoneonists, directors, type-setters and arrangers Libertella and Luis Stazo and with Maestros Mario Abramovich y Eduardo Walczak in the violins, Oscar Palermo piano and Osvaldo Aulicino with the double bass celebrates to them thirty years of career and has just received, with their new Homenaje album has Piazzollathe Gardel Price of the Argentinian Music and in Miami Grammy Latino of the best album of tango.
Rapellons us who they were the musical base of the spectacle Tango Argentino and then of Pasion Tango, two spectacles which traverse planet successfully.

Words with Libertella: Passion is always intact

Little time after having known that they had gained Grammy Latino, ' Pepe' Libertella entrusted certain aspects of its course to us, in which always preceded the work and the respect of a tango where the tradition and the erudite evolution gather.

- JL:"Nous let us be very happy to have had this Grammy, which can be is with our career, with our work. We never know why us a price is given. If we deserve it or not. But when they arrive, they should be accepted "- it says that to us while preparing the repertory in the next concert.

They present the work with which they obtained the Price Grammy Latino and before the Gardel Price, Homenaje has Piazzolla and Pepe says to us: "This CD was not thought as a homage to Piazzolla but it ended up becoming about it a bus we used the formula of always. We think that Piazzolla is the second part of the tango and there is a first of it. In our concerts, before playing of Piazzolla, we have a part which we name while arriving at Piazzolla. Piazzolla was not born from the spontaneous generation, it is a consequence of the tango. Then, this CD has a first part with traditional topics adapted to our time and then of Piazzolla, giving to this work a particular depth. The disc becomes increasingly dense and returns in these climates that Piazzolla knew to write like anybody ".

A few hours later, a storm shook Buenos Aires. The ' Teatro ND Ateneo' was full to crack, there was world until in the street. There was a cut of electricity, and while small lights in the theatre appeared, one intended Libertella to say: "But it is well, we will play without the sound system, one will play acoustic, I prefère, us already did it elsewhere".
But the current returned and the festival started.

The concert, that the public of Paris will be pleased to find at the end of 2003 with the Theatre of the Elysées Fields in Paris, precisely starts with a work of same Libertella, that it dedicated to the Festival of Autumn of Paris in 1983 with Tango Argentino: París Otoñal.
Then, there is an instrumental version of a great tango of Juan Carlos Cobián Nostalgias, then homages to the friends who accompany them with their creations like Julián Plaza with his milonga Nocturna, with the large violonist Enrique Mario Francini in the homage written for Abramovich and Stazo: Preludio has Francini and with the large pianist Osmar Maderna in his imagination of the tango Lluvia de Estrellas.

A few hours earlier, Libertella spoke about the repertoire and the control of the artist. "During all our career, we made a repertory which was not only to give pleasure with the public, never we did not make discs to sell. Once, large Martín Darré (type-setter, directing arranger) said to me: ' Looks at, Libertella, the artist, the popular musician has two missions: to serve the public and to direct it. I give you an example: D' Arienzo serves it and Piazzolla the oriente'. In this disc, we have these two strong points of the work of the artist."

Sextet continues to play, producing this compact sound and giving a lecture in interpretation. 100% tango enters the musical masterliness and ' brutality ancestrale'.
They ons played a waltz: Desde el Alma, homage to this spinal column of the tango: Anibal Troilo. So many strong topics, homage to the artists of the history of our music.

Libertella: "This CD is made with our blood, no publisher was not interested. The first time, we printed thousand CDs, of our pocket. Now, it is published here in Argentina, it gained Gardel and Grammy. We never know not to have been the favourites of the musicians of school but as of our beginnings, we were successes of interpretation. We are not revolutionists, but we look after the value of interpretation. Once, Arturo Toscanini said: ' the stage of creation is finished, now arrives that of the interprétation'. I adhere partially to the opinion of Toscanini because I do not think that the stage of creation is finished. Piazzolla A shown so well ".

When it speaks about creations, the concert returns in a hot phase of definitions, with a version of traditional of Horacio Salgán A Fuego Lento of Marrón y Azul de Piazzolla. Then all the talent of Sexteto Mayor: Tango del Angel, Libertango, Los Pájaros Perdidos, Milonga Carrieguera, Bicicleta Blanca, Verano Porteño, Tangata, una selección that incluyó Prepárense, Triunfal, Fuga y Misterio , Invierno Porteño and "Adiós Nonino".
With the end, Sextet is ovationné, the public upright, the room in festival.

And Pepe continuous: "Piazzolla created a marvellous work, we must interpret it, give him the value that it A. None among us can live elsewhere than in Buenos Aires but we are a young country, which must grow, and we have to learn much from the others. Our music is not lower than the others. But if we gained this Grammy, it east can be because we implied ourselves body and heart to play of the tango. Now we are publishing a double album with the thirty years of Sexteto and in Europe people await many us.

Total festival, obliteration of time and space, quality of this art to be given thus. The art of the tango. And Sexteto Mayor is one of its best ambassadors.
